Independence of alpha and beta diversities.

چکیده

Though Veech and Crist’s paper (Veech and Crist 2010) deals primarily with species richness, ecologists partitioning diversity generally use multiple diversity measures and compare the beta values among them (e.g., Gering et al. 2003, Summerville et al. 2003, 2006, Couteron and Pelissier 2004, Stendera and Johnson 2005, Ribiero et al. 2008). This paper therefore takes a more general perspective and treats all standard measures, not just species richness. Veech and Crist rightly note that I do not mention ‘‘statistical independence’’ in Jost (2007). Statistical independence of alpha and beta is neither necessary nor desirable. Statistical independence between alpha and beta is primarily an empirical question; it depends on nature and on our sampling scheme. In some kinds of ecosystems, it is conceivable that high differentiation is associated with high within-group diversity. The reverse is also conceivable. If nature has these regularities, we would want our measures of alpha and beta to be able to reflect them. We would not want a definition of beta that predetermined the kind of regularities we could observe.

The Surveying of Range Condition and Biodiversity in Four Sites of Northern Alborz Rangelands, Iran

Evaluation of range conditions and plant diversity circumstances can help to rangeland managers who establish their managerial approaches on the basis of ecological capabilities of rangeland ecosystems. Hence, surveying of rangelands was done in four sites of northern Alborz Mt. including western Alborz (Masooleh site), west to middle Alborz (Javaherdeh site), central area (Polour site), and ea...

Proposing a resolution to debates on diversity partitioning.

There have been intense debates about the decomposition of regional diversity (gamma) into its within-community component (alpha) and between-community component (beta). Although a recent Ecology Forum achieved consensus in the use of "numbers equivalents" (Hill numbers) as the proper choice of diversity measure, three related major issues were still left unresolved. (1) What is the precise mea...

Diversity partitioning without statistical independence of alpha and beta.

Diversity partitioning has become a popular method for analyzing patterns of alpha and beta diversity. A recent evaluation of the method emphasized a distinction between additive and multiplicative partitioning and further advocated the use of multiplicative partitioning based on a presumed independence between alpha and beta. Concurrently, additive partitioning was criticized for producing dep...

Girth, minimum degree, independence, and broadcast independence

An independent broadcast on a connected graph $G$is a function $f:V(G)to mathbb{N}_0$such that, for every vertex $x$ of $G$, the value $f(x)$ is at most the eccentricity of $x$ in $G$,and $f(x)>0$ implies that $f(y)=0$ for every vertex $y$ of $G$ within distance at most $f(x)$ from $x$.The broadcast independence number $alpha_b(G)$ of $G$is the largest weight $sumlimits_{xin V(G)}f(x)$of an ind...

Regional variation in the hierarchical partitioning of diversity in coral-dwelling fishes.

The size of the regional species pool may influence local patterns of diversity. However, it is unclear whether certain spatial scales are less sensitive to regional influences than others. Additive partitioning was used to separate coral-dwelling fish diversity to its alpha and beta components, at multiple scales, in several regions across the Indo-Pacific. We then examined how the relative co...
